Jewsons Building Better Communities

Building Better Communities is the annual Jewson Competition that offers community projects across the UK the chance to win a share of a prize fund.

Back in July we travelled to the awards ceremony at East Midlands Conference Centre, in Nottingham, to see if we had been lucky enough to win a share in the fund.

Over 1,800 projects were nominated and thousands of votes were cast. 28 amazing community projects were shortlisted and won a share of the £250,000 prize fund.

And guess what?...We won the top prize of £150,000 to build a much needed multi use, Multi Comfort building within our woodland retreat in Ipswich.

We are still beaming from ear to ear.

This blog is going to capture the progress of the build and hopefully show you what goes in to designing and building a Multi Comfort Passivhaus building.

Today we met with some of the Jewson's team in our make shift office at Brickmakers Wood. It was a very general meeting to discuss how we go about accessing the fund and a chat about builders.

Luckily we can use our own regular builders and architects as they are passivhaus building accredited. Some of there recent Passivhaus projects can be seen here:

Darren, Kevin and Rob

It turns out that both Darren from 'Maple Building Servise' and Kevin from 'KHA Chartered Surveyors' also work with their daughters. What a lovely coincidence.

Today we met with Dean Welham from Ipswich Borough Council to discuss 2 trees that need to be felled in order for the building work to start. Brickmakers Wood has a tree preservation order on all of the trees within it and we are grateful for that as we like protecting trees. The loss of these 2 small trees is a shame and we will plant 2 others in there place in a location close by.

The meeting went well and afterwards we all shared tea and biscuits whilst discussing the Ipswich football game (yawn).
